Sponsor of IBAS – International Brazil Air Show 2019, SITA, IT provider for the air transport sector, will present news in the 2nd edition of the event. In an interview, SITA Vice President for Latin America, Elbson Quadros, spoke about the importance of participating again at IBAS and the airport market.

Held by Sator and with GRU Airport, IBAS – International Brazil Air Show will take place on September 11, 12 and 13, 2019, at the GRU Airport – São Paulo International Airport. The event, focusing on the international aerospace industry and airport infrastructure, will bring together leaders from the global air segment to discuss the development of the sector.

IBAS also has an exhibition dedicated to companies, especially SITA, which deals with almost all the airlines and airports in the world and also provides border management solutions for more than 40 governments.

To talk about how the company will participate in this edition, IBAS interviewed SITA’s vice president for Latin America, Elbson Quadros. The executive also addresses the prospects for the market and in relation to the event, as well as news that the company will present in the three days of the IBAS 2019.

Follow the interview with Elbson Quadros:

IBAS: In your view, what is the perspective for the airport market for the coming years?

Elbson Quadros: We believe that the trend is more and more investment in new technologies in order to offer passengers an ideal, fast, efficient and, above all, safe journey. In our most recent research, we have seen that airlines are investing in new technologies that will offer them both strategic and operational benefits in the short and long term, such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence and blockchain.

Another investment-focused innovation is identity verification at self-service check-in totems/kiosks, used by 41% of airports, according to our Air Transport IT Insights survey of 2018. However, still using the data of our research, 74% have plans to deploy the technology by the end of 2021. Self-loading gates using biometrics and identification documentation, such as passports, will also become prevalent over the next three years. 59% of airports and 63% of airlines plan to use it.

Safe and uninterrupted travels are key to the future of the air transport industry. Airlines and airports are investing in future-oriented technologies that will give organizations the competitive edge they need to succeed in 2019, always aiming to improve the journey of the passenger from start to finish. Our research (Air Transport IT Insights) also reveals that 88% of airlines have plans to invest in self-service at airports by 2021. About 68% have a major program implemented and 20% are planning research and development projects. 71% of airlines also have investments for “biometric identity management solutions”.

The industry’s investment in these advances will continue to enhance and streamline the passenger experience while helping airlines and airports around the world meet the current and emerging regulations of government and border agencies.

IBAS: Why to participate at IBAS 2019 and what are the expectations?
Elbson Quadros: Airports, along with airlines, are constantly looking for ways to improve infrastructure and provide passengers with a safe and secure trip, and SITA is committed to identifying market trends, promoting the interests of the community and meeting the needs of the community as a whole. This includes working closely with associations around the world to set industry standards and together we offer an ideal and fast journey to customers.

We want to strengthen our performance and relationship in Latin America’s aviation industry, and events such as the IBAS – International Brazil Air Show are crucial in this regard. It is the second year that we have supported IBAS because we believe in the results of this participation. We know that the event focuses on the international aerospace industry and airport infrastructure and will bring together leaders of the global air segment to discuss the development of the sector in Latin America, aspects that we consider very important to align our steps with the industry.

IBAS: How can the event contribute to the dissemination of the company’s products and/or services?
Elbson Quadros: By bringing together leaders from the global air segment to talk and debate about the international aerospace industry and airport infrastructure, SITA will have the opportunity to demonstrate its technological innovations and market trends, promoting the interests of the community by participating in the agenda. In addition, we can work closely with these leaders to set industry standards.

IBAS: What products and / or services will SITA present at IBAS 2019? What are the news that the market and the participants should expect?
Elbson Quadros: Demonstration of Smart Path™, which allows passengers to pass through the airport without having to remove the boarding pass and passport at all checkpoints. Already in use at some airports around the world, it uses digital biometric ID management technology to make travel easier. In addition, our Self Bag Drop technology, which automatically speeds up the process in one flight.

We will also present Digital Twins, a virtual model of a process, product or service allowing data analysis and systems monitoring to avoid problems before they occur, to avoid downtime, to develop new opportunities and even to plan for the future using (fundamental to the concept of total airport management and collaborative decision making). And Hololens, the world’s first independent holographic computer, allowing users to engage with digital content and interact with holograms in the world around them.

IBAS:
How important is the partnership with IBAS for your organization?
Elbson Quadros: Because we believe that the airline industry needs to grow in a planned and integrated way, SITA aims to achieve shared cost infrastructure efficiency and to provide passengers with an intelligent experience, realizing the dream of a perfect journey while developing improvements to the market. Likewise, IBAS recognizes the importance of having a dedicated strategy for responding to and following technological developments and this is of primordial to SITA.

IBAS:
What is the importance of the event for the industry considering the Brazilian, Latin American and world market?
Elbson Quadros: Brazil’s airlines and airports have identified opportunities to enhance the passenger experience through technology and accelerate both transformation and innovation. We can already see significant results in relation to luggage, for example. In the last 10 years, the number of lost luggage has dropped by 70%, according to data from our 2018 survey, Air Transport IT Insights. GOL and LATAM, for example, are investing in auto luggage dispatch, significantly reducing queuing time – now done in 40 seconds or less.

The Auxiliary Air Transport Services, or Ground Handling, responsible for 42 thousand direct jobs and fundamental for the sustainable development of the sector, will be one of the themes presented in IBAS - International Brazil Air Show 2019.   Aviation growth requires that the supply chain also prepare for this challenge by investing in specialized equipment and manpower to meet growing demand, with emphasis on quality and competitive pricing.
